Bone Yard Effects: Monster Transformations

Larry Bones of Bone Yard Effects creates the prosthetics for Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. I filmed the talented team of makeup artists transform scareactors into creepy clowns, bloody victims and zombies.

The makeup team and the monsters shared some incredible stories and insights into the art of horror, fight or flight reactions and how a talented scareactor can really bring the makeup to life.

Shar Mayer has been a monster in the haunt industry for over 30 years! After her makeup was finished, she unleashed her skills and made everyone scream, laugh and brought some of us to tears.

I can't wait to share this with you,

THE NIGHTMARE #SXSW

At SXSW I had the honor of watching the new horror documentary, THE NIGHTMARE, with its composer Jonathan Snipes! I still can't believe that Snipes, who also scored ROOM 237, is now scoring my first feature film!

THE NIGHTMARE, a new documentary by Rodney Ascher

Every note of the visionary score and soundscape will raise a new hair on the back of your neck!

Play the VIDEO at the bottom of this post to see and hear for yourself!

THE NIGHTMARE is about people who experience sleep paralysis, a phenomenon in which a person, either falling asleep or awakening, temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak or react while having terrifying hallucinations.

Before the film started, a question was asked on the microphone,"Who here has ever had sleep paralysis?" And then the hands went up, including one man who sat next to me.

The lights go out... The movie starts... And the first time the "hat man" (a commonly seen sleep paralysis entity) appears on-screen, the guy next to me looks away and covers his ears. The movie was getting under my skin and the guy next to me was really freaking me out.

Needless to say, I was in horror-heaven.

THE NIGHTMARE will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

Rodney Ascher (Director, ROOM 237)  filmed visceral re-enactments, combined with creepy interviews, and behind-the-scenes moments of the doc itself to create an innovative documentary experience that serves up the horror.

I felt like I was 8 years old again, at a sleep-over, trying to out-scare the other kids with my best ghost story.

This part kept me up at night :)

This part kept me up at night :)

There's a moment in the film when a man draws a picture of the nightmare creatures who tormented him as a child. The sound of the pencil on paper combines with the sound of static, and intensifies as the music builds to an eerie crescendo and a mesmerizing reveal.

Ascher crafts scenes like this throughout the film that fill you with dread and awe, all at the same time!

Fellini invented the mockumentary with LA DOLCE VITA and with THE NIGHTMARE (and ROOM 237) Ascher has created the horrormentary.

Don't expect any scientific explanations, or sleep paralysis disbelievers because this isn't a traditional info-doc. This is a horror-doc, that vividly simulates the terrors of sleep paralysis and makes you paranoid that you'll suffer from it, long after the film is over!

You'll be able to experience THE NIGHTMARE  in theaters and VOD on June 5th thanks to Gravitas Ventures who purchased it at SXSW. Until then...

HAUNTERS The Movie #SXSW

Yesterday I was a speaker on a panel at SXSW! And I got to show the HAUNTERS trailer. It was a packed crowd and the audience laughed and cheered! It was awesome!

Our panel was called #BreakingThe4thWall -  I talked about the rise in popularity of horror attractions from interactive horror experiences to "full contact" extreme haunts.

On the panel with me were Marc Goodchild CEO of Sync Screen and Julian McCrea CEO of Portal Entertainment.

Julian creates thrillers the iPad that actually interacts with your face. Depending on  facial expressions and reactiobs to the story, the thriller will either become more or less intense to properly scare the crap out of you!

After the talk I had meetings with reps from film festivals, managers, agents and other documentary directors who are really excited about HAUNTERS The Movie and have been giving me great feedback, advice and some amazing opportunities.

From Kickstarter to SXSW, this journey continues to amaze me.

Thank you all for your support,

Our panel @ SXSW was Awesome!

Halloween in MARCH!

I had so much fun with all the haunt & horror fans at the 3rd Annual Spook Show in La Mirada, California.

People came out to buy costumes and props, sign up for haunt experiences, pose for pics with monsters and to celebrate all things horror & Halloween... in MARCH!

There are 2 more haunt/horror conventions this month: TransWorld in St. Louis, Missouri and Monsterpalooza in Burbank, California.

Everyday's Halloween,
