THE NIGHTMARE is about people who experience sleep paralysis, a phenomenon in which a person, either falling asleep or awakening, temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak or react while having terrifying hallucinations.
Before the film started, a question was asked on the microphone,"Who here has ever had sleep paralysis?" And then the hands went up, including one man who sat next to me.
The lights go out... The movie starts... And the first time the "hat man" (a commonly seen sleep paralysis entity) appears on-screen, the guy next to me looks away and covers his ears. The movie was getting under my skin and the guy next to me was really freaking me out.
Needless to say, I was in horror-heaven.
Rodney Ascher (Director, ROOM 237) filmed visceral re-enactments, combined with creepy interviews, and behind-the-scenes moments of the doc itself to create an innovative documentary experience that serves up the horror.
I felt like I was 8 years old again, at a sleep-over, trying to out-scare the other kids with my best ghost story.
There's a moment in the film when a man draws a picture of the nightmare creatures who tormented him as a child. The sound of the pencil on paper combines with the sound of static, and intensifies as the music builds to an eerie crescendo and a mesmerizing reveal.
Ascher crafts scenes like this throughout the film that fill you with dread and awe, all at the same time!
Fellini invented the mockumentary with LA DOLCE VITA and with THE NIGHTMARE (and ROOM 237) Ascher has created the horrormentary.
Don't expect any scientific explanations, or sleep paralysis disbelievers because this isn't a traditional info-doc. This is a horror-doc, that vividly simulates the terrors of sleep paralysis and makes you paranoid that you'll suffer from it, long after the film is over!
You'll be able to experience THE NIGHTMARE in theaters and VOD on June 5th thanks to Gravitas Ventures who purchased it at SXSW. Until then...
